Top 5 Anticipated Upcoming Movie Releases

  1. SpectreSpectre

US Release: November 6, 2015

Why I Am Excited:  I have watched every James Bond film and read most of the books. I cannot recommend the books; they are the epitome of bad pulp fiction.  However, I genuinely enjoy a majority of the film adaptations. Skyfall was excellent, definitely one of the better Bond films in recent years. Hopefully Spectre will be a strong follow up. If not, hopefully the entertainment value will be high. Though, I infinitely prefer Adele’s Bond song to Sam Smith’s song.

Synopsis: A cryptic message from Bond’s past sends him on a trail to uncover a sinister organization. While M battles political forces to keep the secret service alive, Bond peels back the layers of deceit to reveal the terrible truth behind SPECTRE. (From IMDb)

  1. In The Heart of the Seain-the-heart-of-the-sea

US Release: December 11, 2015

Why I Am Excited: Ron Howard is an extremely talented director and I usually enjoy all of his films. Howard and Chris Hemsworth last teamed up for the excellent film Rush in 2013. In the Heart of the Sea is their second collaboration and it looks fantastic. There has not been a good sailing adventure film in a while. Also, it makes Moby-Dick, that scourge of all High School reading lists, sound exciting.

Synopsis: Based on the 1820 event, a whaling ship is preyed upon by a sperm whale, stranding its crew at sea for 90 days, thousands of miles from home. (From IMDb)

  1. Star Wars: The Force Awakensstar-wars-the-force-awakens-teaser-poster1

US Release: December 18, 2015

Why I Am Excited: Well it is Star Wars and it is not being directed by George Lucas. Episodes I, II, and III were all terrible films with cool effects. I am looking forward to a film with both explosive effects and a solid narrative. JJ Abrams did a great job revitalizing Star Trek and, hopefully, will bring his golden touch to a film about a universe far, far away.

Synopsis: Your guess is as good as mine. Here is IMDb’s elucidating description: A continuation of the saga created by George Lucas and set thirty years after Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983).

  1. The RevenantThe Revenant

US Wide Release: January 8, 2015

Why I Am Excited: Leonardo DiCaprio breaks out of his suit-and-tie professional character streak and goes full on mountain man. I noticed, however, that his accent changes three times throughout the trailer. So this might not be the Oscar winning film. One of the main reasons I am excited is the film is different from a lot of other ones coming out. It is not a sequel, prequel, remake, or spinoff. The film is a purely original screenplay and is unlikely to have a sequel. I enjoy watching movies where the plot is neatly concluded in the running time of one film. Having to constantly go see sequels for eventual plot resolution is exhausting. (Of Monsters and Men song Six Weeks is based off the event depicted in this move)

Synopsis: In the 1820s, a frontiersman, Hugh Glass, sets out on a path of vengeance against those who left him for dead after a bear mauling. (From IMDb)

  1. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2mockingjay

US Release: November 20, 2015

Why I Am Excited: This is the last film based off The Hunger Games Trilogy. Part 1 of Mockingjay mainly dealt with all the angst character development and Part 2 contains all the action sequences. I highly dislike the fact that Mockingjay was split into two films; it could have easily been one fantastic film. Also, I am ready for the movies to be over and for Katniss to rise victorious over The Capital. It is a good thing this movie is coming out in November; I do not think it could have successfully competed against Star Wars.

Synopsis: As the war of Panem escalates to the destruction of other districts by the Capitol, Katniss Everdeen, the reluctant leader of the rebellion, must bring together an army against President Snow, while all she holds dear hangs in the balance. (From IMDb)
